- Description
- "Making Waves: Controversial Art in Utah" is an unprecedented examination of those works that have, over the past century, caused public outcry, drew the threat of censorship or were censored in some way in Utah. The purpose of the exhibition is a three-fold. First, to examine the nature of community standards in our state, the ways they changed over time and the influence they have on expression in the arts. Second, to celebrate freedom of expression by exhibiting works that tested societal boundaries during the periods in which they were created or exhibited. Third, to encourage public dialogue about controversy, censorship and compromise. Works have been chosen based on three principal criteria: the extent to which they reflect the attitudes of the times in which they were created; the extent to which they reflect a range of controversial subject matter; and the aesthetic and artistic quality of the works themselves. Exhibition held in the Main Gallery Center.

- Victor Kastelic: Cloudburst
- Personal Creator
- Victor Kastelic
- Description
- A site-specific installation by Victor Kastelic. The unique relationship between the artist and Director Ric Collier is manifested in "Cloudburst," described by the artist as "...an enormous cumulus of imagery--free of filters, schemes, limits and rules that I normally apply to my paintings." This freedom is visible in the multicolored gallery walls; the 200-plus drawings taped to the wall; four large oil paintings and several drawings that were penciled directly on the wall. There sheer number of scenes, people and objects was overwhelming-- a feeling that was only enhanced by the unusual nature of the installation. Exhibition held in the Street Level Gallery space.

- Kazuo Kadonaga: Wood Paper Bamboo Glass
- Personal Creator
- Kazuo Kadonaga
- Description
- Exploring twenty years of the artist's work in wood, paper, bamboo and glass. Kadonaga eliminates all arbitrary elements from his art, seeking to demonstrate the inherent composition and the qualities of natural materials. His work is distinguished by a direct engagement with the physical properties of materials--wood, bamboo, paper or glass--and a system that makes visible the hidden activity of seemingly static matter. Exhibition held in the Main Gallery space.

- Allison Lacher: Think Pink
- Personal Creator
- Allison Lacher
- Description
- Allison Lacher's work focuses on making objects and installations that are shamelessly flirtatious. Attached to four lustrous, pink fabric panels are over 1,000 hand-tied satin pink bows. The bows, dense and heavy at the bottom of the fabric, gradually thin out as they rise to the top. Somewhere between abstraction and figuration, their functional resemblance to domestic draperies is sublimated by a teasing prom gown reference. Congregating and dispersing, they allude to flowers, songbirds, and towering wedding cakes. The viewer is invited to question this blushing installation as it unabashedly invokes many romantic cliches. Exhibition held in the Projects Gallery space.

- The Vanishing: Re-Presenting the Chinese in the American West
- Personal Creator
- Hung Liu; Rene Yung;
- Description
- The discovery of gold in California int he mid 1800s brought thousands of people to the American West. Among those who came were many Chinese--mostly young men who believed a few years of mining would allow them to return home with a small fortune. That dream was realized for very few of these immigrants. Unable to afford passage home, most of these Chinese stayed in the West and became a significant labor force in a number of growing industries. Wool mills, garment manufacturers, mining operations and the railroads employed many of the Chinese. By 1882, the Chinese population in the United States was 110,000. Unfortunately, the post civil war depression fueled anti-immigrant sentiments and, in 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which halted all immigration and prohibited those already in the country from becoming U.S. Citizens. The Exhibit features photographs of Chinese immigrants in Idaho, an installation containing bars of soap imprinted with the word REMEMBER; paintings of 19th century Chinese female "types," prostitutes, child street acrobats, war refugees, and women laborers. Exhibition held in the Street Level Gallery space.
