Special Convocation 1992
Description
Special convocation held for Dave Carlson. Student Body President Dave Carlson had graduation from college as his main objective, with a family and work in the future. However, on July 27, he received serious head injuries in a car accident near Beaver, his long-term goals took second place to a more immediate objective - participating in Salt Lake Community College 's first-ever convocation - kicking off the new school year. Wednesday he made a trip from LDS Hospital to spend a few minutes at the SLCC podium. He stressed to his fellow students that "goals are important . . . Without this goal, I wouldn't have been here. I didn't even have a voice until last week." Carlson, helped from a wheelchair to the podium by his mother, SLCC vice president Mark Fisher and a nurse, received a standing ovation from administrators, faculty, students and friends in recognition of his determination to attend the convocation. He still faces five to seven weeks of hospitalization and prolonged therapy. The convocation will set a precedent, said SLCC President Frank Budd. "Traditions are an essential ingredient of success," he said. Besides the annual convocation, a faculty lecture series will be initiated this year as a tradition for the expanding college.
