- The Squadron Worked In Conjunction With Aircraft Of The Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam and United States Forces

- Description
- In November 1967 a 9 Squadron Iroquois lands to pick up members of the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR) during operation Santa Fe, a grueling three week-long operation through inhospitable country some 23 kilometres from the Task Force Base at Nui Dat. A second RAAF service began in Vietnam on 3 May 1966 when an advance party from No. 9 Squadron arrived at Vung Tau. The squadron’s helicopters arrived on 6 June aboard HMAS Sydney and were flown to Vung Tau that day before moving to Nui Dat at the end of the month. No. 9 Squadron’s helicopters carried out a variety of roles in Vietnam. Most important were the transport of infantry and logistic support, but the helicopters were also used to drop leaflets over enemy territory. Some were also used in aerial spraying to rid the base of mosquitoes and, more aggressively, to kill vegetative growth around the base and to destroy agricultural plots in Viet Cong territory, denying the enemy a source of food. Just two months after the squadron’s arrival in Vietnam, two pilots were called on to drop ammunition to the beleaguered troops of D Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, at Long Tan. Flying in appalling weather at tree-top height; they dropped ammunition to the soldiers on the ground through driving rain and under intense Viet Cong fire. The squadron operated again that night, after the battle, to retrieve the wounded, guided only by the light emanating from the open hatches of armoured personnel carriers. No. 9 Squadron was re-equipped with larger Iroquois helicopters in 1967. Now equipped with 16 helicopters, the squadron worked in conjunction with aircraft of the Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam and United States forces, on the dangerous tasks of transporting men to and from patrols and evacuating wounded soldiers from the battlefield. On some occasions these operations ended with the death of helicopter crewmen and the destruction of the aircraft. The last members of 9 Squadron left Vung Tau on 17 December 1971. Six squadron members were killed on operations, and another man, attached to the squadron from No. 1 Operational Support Unit, was also killed.

- Description
- Vietnam Sniper - George "Ben" Norman in a rubber tree plantation in Vietnam: "I haven't shaved in 3 weeks, had a shower or a change of clothes. I smell so bad the flies won't land on me. Every scratch and mosquito bite is infected and I have ring worm everywhere my ruck sack and clothes rub my body. I have leeches attached to my skin, dysentery and I have had to brush mosquitoes off muddy bomb craters to re-fill my canteens for drinking water. I am truly a "mad dog animal at this point", ready to kill! Before I arrived in Vietnam I weighed between 165-170 lbs... after returning from the field I weighed 138lbs! 25th Infantry Division 1970-1971. Whatever conflict or war you may have served in, the average citizen has no idea what an infantry soldier truly has to endure!!! This is why the infantry brotherhood is so strong because... we know! - Combat Ration Packs and Ammunition Laid Out for 5RAR Infantrymen

- Description
- ‘C’ packs and ammunition laid out ready for 5RAR infantrymen about to begin an operation, 1970. Photo by Carole Talty. Vietnam Veteran comments: "We had a mixture of Australian and American C [Combat] rations. We preferred the American for the greater variety… in the Australian packs we would keep the tins. There were two tins. One for morning, one for evening and ‘dog biscuits’ for lunch. A tin of margarine, a roll of toilet paper, which was like greaseproof paper and no bloody good anyway. Box of matches, sachets of sugar, a tube of condensed milk, tea bags… sachets of coffee, a packet of rice and that was it, but we’d keep the two tins, condensed milk, tube of jam. Oh a bar of chocolate. Yeah, keep that. A packet of lollies as well, we’d keep them. Jam, rice, and that was about right. The cereal box and the dog biscuits. Stuff them. Throw that away. Get rid of all the extraneous crap and just keep what you need."

- Fire Support Base

- Description
- As the words ‘Fire Support Base’ imply, artillery was central to operations at Coral and Balmoral. Although the guns played a defensive role during North Vietnamese attacks on both bases, their main purpose was to protect infantry patrolling outside the wire. In an indication of the volume of fire provided by the guns, these shells constitute a resupply for 102 Field Battery at Coral.

- Description
- Recon 1/502 101st Airborne Division, Vietnam 1969-70. Photo by Ruben Yzaguirre The 502nd Infantry Regiment (502nd INF), previously titled the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR), is an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment was established shortly after the American entry into World War II, and was assigned as a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, "The Screaming Eagles", one of the most decorated formations of the U.S. Army. The regiment saw substantial action in the European Theater of World War II and was deactivated in 1945, shortly after the end of the war. Reactivating in a new form in 1956, the 502nd Infantry has served in the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. It was removed from parachute status with the rest of the 101st Airborne Division in 1969, and since 1974, the regiment has been classified as an Air Assault unit. Currently, its 1st and 2nd battalions are active. Both battalions are assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) 2nd Battalion served almost seven years in the Republic of Vietnam. 1st Battalion did five years. Fighting scattered actions under two different brigade headquarters from the Mekong River delta in the south to the DMZ up north, they earned 27 campaign streamers, six American, and eight Vietnamese unit citations between them, including two Presidential Unit Citations earned by 2nd Battalion for An Khe and Dak To. 1/502 fought in the A Shau Valley and the Rescue of Dustoff 65. Three 2nd Battalion soldiers earned the Medal of Honor. Specialist Dale E. Wayrynen, Private First Class Milton A. Lee, and Corporal Frank R. Fratellenico all have Fort Campbell landmarks named for them. In December 1971, after having drawn down in country, the 101st began returning home to Fort Campbell.
