The exhibition is a small survey of images created by Utah artists over the past sixty years. Limited in scope, one may nonetheless discover something about local traditions and aesthetic values front the landscape, still-life, figurative and nonobjective work included. here. For example, Utah has not been completely isolated from the larger art world as both non-Utahns and its own citizens often claim. While this region was geographically remote from East Coast and European art centers, Utah artists made contact with New York and Paris beginning in the nineteenth century and established a pattern of such study for subsequent generations. The result was that new ideas and ways of working were regularly imported. Some ideas and techniques found read acceptance (Impressionism), while others encountered hard resistance (modernism). Historically, this very tension in Utah between an essentially conservative community and the ever-present forces of change has kept dialogue on the arts lively. Permanent Collection.
Soy Un Testigo/ I Am Witness: Contemporary Latino Art
"Soy Un Testigo" is an exhibit of twenty-four contemporary paintings, sculpture, and prints by ten individual artists and one installation group. It provides a rare opportunity for people in Utah to experience original visual works by some of this country's finest contemporary talent. It gives us the opportunity to "hear what the Latino artists are saying. To hear them with our eyes and with our imagination," as distinguished Mexican author Octavio Paz Said of another contemporary Latino art exhibit ten years ago ("Hispanic Art in the United States: 30 Contemporary Painters and Sculptors").
The self-taught artists represented use their passion and personal vision to transform common materials into highly charged objects. Because of their need to make things and to tell their story, they invest their drawings, paintings and constructions with a power which leaps out at the viewer. The images have a physical quality which thrusts them into the viewer's space in an attempt to connect with us.
