The Salt Lake Art Center exhibition "West Coast Master of Assemblage and Collage" pays tribute to the small group of artists who are universally acknowledged as masters of mixed media expression. Following the Second World War, San Francisco and Los Angeles became havens for a small group of artists and poets who saw the use of found materials and objects as fodder for assemblages and collages that address social and aesthetic issues at work in contemporary society. The sense of liberation, mixed with the various states of anxiety of neglected social issues, gave the avant-guard art of the 1960's a prophetic edginess. As critics of social injustice and the misuses of media, the art of Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz and Betye Saar have assured them a special place in American history. Exhibition held in the Projects Gallery.
