Norma Carr is the first Utah woman to serve as athletic director for both men's and women's sports programs. She was also the first woman to officiate both men's and women's basketball. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1969, where she participated in five sports. She started coaching at Davis High before becoming the first woman to coach Division I women's athletics at the University of Utah. She was the U.'s head volleyball coach and an assistant coach for basketball and softball. In 1989, Carr was named the athletic director for Salt Lake Community College. She's a member of the Utah Softball Hall of Fame, the Utah Coaches of Merit Hall of Fame and UHSAA Officials Hall of Fame and Circle of Fame. In 2009, she was named National Administrator of the Year. She also coordinates officials for the WAC and MWC and is the current director for Region 18, the region in which SLCC competes. While this pioneer in women's athletics announced her retirement she still plans to continue coordinating officials, as well as fulfill some duties for Region 18.
The Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup is located at Hidden Valley Country Club. The fundraising event offers a chance for donors to enjoy a day of golf with friends, and an opportunity to test their skills with other leaders in the state at one of Utah’s premier courses. The Cup event creates scholarships for current and future Salt Lake Community College students. All of the proceeds from the tournament go directly to benefit deserving Salt Lake Community College students.
Betsy Specketer is the long and highly decorated women’s basketball coach at Salt Lake Community College. After coaching for 10 years at an Illinois high school, Specketer joined former SLCC coach Monica Starrett’s staff in 1994. She became the head coach in ’96, coinciding with the Bruins’ move from the old South High School gym to the Lifetime Activities Center on the Taylorsville campus. Specketer was head coach for nearly two decades as of these photos.

Whirlyball is a team sport invented by Stan Mangum that combines elements of basketball and jai alai (a sport involving a ball bounced off a walled space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held device), or rather a combination of lacrosse and bumper cars, with the players riding Whirlybugs, small electric vehicles similar to bumper cars. Because play requires a special court, it is played in only a handful of locations in the United States and Canada.
