Beautiful bunker, used mostly for hiding out & sunbathing on days off. Photo by David Adams, a Cobra pilot in the gun group during the years 1970-1971 with the Scout Platoon, D Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment. 1969-1970. Courtesy of Mike Gustin.
"Shorty" Aapodoca, center of the picture looking straight back. "He and I were on the same gun crew for months. After I rotated out of Vietnam, I still think of him a lot and just imagine him back in the states with his family etc. I only recently learned he has been dead for 40 years.... and I don't know how many others like that. This picture was in the QUE SON MOUNTAINS OF QUANG NAM PROVINCE. We called this mountain top artillery position 'LANDING ZONE RYDER.' I think the province was called Quang Tin at that time, as I think the Que Son mountains was the border between Quang Nam and Quang Tin Provinces. Doug Miller remembers of "Shorty Aapodoca: He was quite a guy. Larry Martinez said he was killed in a car accident not too long after he returned home. We are losing too many too fast." -Pat Hixon.
