The Art Truck brings exciting and accessible contemporary art created by leading local and national artists directly to schools and community venues along the Wasatch Front. Engage in learning about our current Art Truck installation by Carlos Rosales-Silva, a contemporary artist from Austin, Texas whose paintings photos, sculptures and drawings investigate themes of borders, diversity and identity. Growing up in various parts of Texas, artist Carlos Rosales-Silva had to reconcile his own identity — half Mexican, half American Indian — with that of his larger-than-life state. "Texas history is all about mythmaking" said Rosales-Silva, 30, who's in Utah this month with an art exhibit on wheels in the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art's Art Truck. Rosales-Silva, who is now living in New York but will forever associate himself with Texas, aims to examine identity issues of race and class and "filter them through formal art movements." He lists as examples Op Art (think Bauhaus) and Abstract Expressionism (Mark Rothko and others), as well as popular culture iconography. Take, for example, his "Texas Comanches" banner. It's a large red-and-white banner like one you would see in any high-school gymnasium. But this one reads, "Texas Comanches, State Champions, 1747-1865" the dates indicating how long the Comanches roamed Texas before white settlers ultimately defeated the native population. "A lot of my things have a sense of humor" Rosales-Silva said. "It's laughing to keep from crying. If you can make people laugh, you can get their attention." The Art Truck will be easy to identify as it drives around Salt Lake City: It will be wrapped in a 7-foot-high vinyl version of Rosales-Silva's diptych "Bringing Sexy Back." The premise for this exhibition began with the desire to feature contemporary Salt Lake City based artists working in diversity of media as well as forms of expression. The sense of renewal--by its alchemical and apocalyptic themes--weaves through and binds together the works that otherwise may be only marginally related. In spite of the diversity of media, expression and personal styles, the art tends to reflect states of transcendence, representations of experience beyond ordinary thought and belief. From Maryann Webster's tattooed ceramic dolls, to Lewis Francis' haunting photographs of salt encrusted pylons, to Anne Watson's moving "painted journal" chronicling the passing of her mother, to Lincoln Lysager and David Ruhlman's imaginatively cryptic, mixed media panels, the sense of other-world-liness is strongly implied throughout this exhibit. Open English @ SLCC: Texts on Writing, Language, and Literacy
Open English @ SLCC is an evolving digital book created and maintained by English Department faculty at Salt Lake Community College. It exists to provide our faculty–over one hundred full- and part-time instructors–with robust, flexible, and locally produced open educational resources (OER) that can be used for teaching a variety of courses across our composition sequence. The book is organized around a set of six locally-responsive threshold concepts that form the conceptual backbone of how our department approaches the work of teaching reading, writing and rhetoric. These threshold concepts–transformative, integrative and troubling ideas that we feel are essential for any kind of mastery in writing and literate practices–build on foundational work in thresholds by Eric Meyer and Ray Land, in addition to more recent work on threshold concepts in writing by Linda Adler-Kassler, Elizabeth Wardle and many others. Unlike a traditional textbook, the writing in this book invites remix, adaptation, and repurposing to match the specific needs of its users–SLCC writing students and instructors primarily–but also faculty and students at other schools, course designers, WPAS, and anyone else interested in open texts about writing, language and literacy. Salt Lake Community College will celebrate its 75th anniversary in fall 2023. This milestone is a testament to past accomplishments and a catalyst for transforming the College in the future. By focusing on students, the plan positions the College as a foundational player in the community, a driving factor in the state economy and a leader in the evolving educational landscape. We must move forward in areas such as access, completion and equity, and collectively make progress on the goals we've set. This document outlines those goals that have been set as well as the strategies envisioned to help meet these goals. This document, SLCC GOALS: College Performance Update - Spring 2019 provides an update as to where we are currently with our 2016-2023 Strategic Plan Goals and Strategies. The report was presented at SLCC 360, and focuses on the following goals from the Strategic Plan: Increase in Student Completion, Improvement in Transfer Preparation Pathways, Alignment with and Response to Workforce Needs, Securing Institutional Sustainability and Capacity, and Achieving Equity in Student Participation and Completion. Strategies and measurements of success were included.
