Battleground States
Battleground States brings together artists who critically engage with the discourse of visual culture and gender studies. Through video, sculpture, installation, and photography, these works explore ideas of how figuration and identity are connected. The exhibition begins with Utah artist Trevor Southey as his process of self-realization has made him an art historical pivot when discussing gender politics within the culture of Utah. The narrative continues by presenting generations of artists across the globe, leading the viewer along a path of self-realization in which concepts of coupling or completing the self are represented as spiritual quests. Battleground States analyzes the space between traditional gender duality by exploring alternative forms such as the third gender, a generally foreign concept in Western culture. In their non-Western roles, these alternative identities denote a space for possibility and transcendence. The exhibition moves towards notions of the “post-gender” as a way to better understand how our cultural diversities open up interpretations of a third space. Behind the Lines: Drawings and Objects by Michael David Hall
"Behind the Lines" is an apt description for the Salt Lake Art Center's exhibition of Hall's drawings and sculptures. What happens behind, and indeed beyond, their physical presence yields the content of these works. Through his mixed-media drawings in particular, Hall endeavors to give form to his subjectivity, to literally draw it as he comes face to face with the objective world. The linear shapes, gestures, and contours of the drawings create complex infrastructures that embody personal states of innocence and discovery. They are insightful testaments to Hal's living int he moment. As transitory self-portraits, however, they ultimately defy containment of his expansive, ever-changing pursuit of knowledge. Bill Viola: Ascension
Entering the darkened Projects Gallery in the Salt Lake Art Center you are met with a wall-size projection of a serene underwater landscape that is suddenly displaced when a fully clothed man plunges into the water from above. Accompanied by a roar of sound and a luminous explosion of bubbles and turbulence, he slowly sinks with arms outstretched, his body limp and motionless. Rays of light undulate as streams of glowing bubbles ascend to the disturbed surface. Midway down, his descent slows and finally stops, his body remaining suspended in space. Is the man dead or alive? He does not move, but the water moves him. Very slowly, he begins to rise until he reaches the surface. There, air bubbles emerge from his mouth and he begins his involuntary descent again. He sinks into the depths and his body then disappears into the darkness. The landscape returns to its original peaceful state. Then, unexpectedly, the man plunges into the water again with a shocking explosion of light, sound and movement, as the video loops once more. Blindsight: A New Perspective on Painting
People marvel over blind musicians such as Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, but then their music is so fine you forget they're blind. What, then, of artists nearing the end of their sight? "Blindsight: A New Perspective on Seeing" dispenses with any need of asking that question -- in theory. Instead, it presents works by four painters who started their careers with full vision, only to have it deteriorate almost completely. The result is an exhibit surrounded by questions of whether artistic ideas and visions are more grounded in the mind or the outside world. Salt Lake City native Vojko Rizvanovic adds his paintings to those of artists John Bramblitt of Denton, Texas, George Mendoza of Las Cruces, N.M., and Eric Peterson of Kemah, Texas. Blue
Color conveys meaning. Blue is the color of things infinite--of the ocean and the sky. Without shape or line, unattached to any object, the color blue can make us feel space, freedom, distance, openness and continuity--abstractions rooted in thousands of years of equating the limitless with blue. To see color, we need history, science, myth, religion, literature, psychology and a great many other disciplines, for the meaning of color is deeply ingrained in the evolution of our collective experience and traditions. The exhibition explores the symbolic, emotional and purely formal nature of all colors by focusing on one color, alone: blue.
